Does anyone know if you can use a PPC CF satnav as a passenger on a commercial flight?
I want to know a) if its safe to do so, I guess it is as it only receiving? And b) will it pick up or will the body of a jet shield it?
Thanks

I would have thought the size of the windows would be a problem, them being very small and all? It might make getting a lock rather hard.
The last flight I was on, our position was displayed on the screen in front of us anyway _________________ TomTom 6 - SPV M5000 and WM6

I would say your better of putting a film or two onto your PPC surely?
Who's the flight with, maybe someone can tell you if they have films etc. I think most do these days. _________________ TomTom 6 - SPV M5000 and WM6

Yes, it is possible - I have done it dozens of times. It keeps me amused on otherwise dull flights! Set a waypoint at your destination and see how far you have to go. Also checkout the flight path, speed, altitude, climb rate etc. Great for spotting what that city/motorway/lake/river or where you house is too. If your GPS keeps a tracklog it is interesting to see the path the plane takes, they don't always fly direct to the destination.
There are a few things to remember though:
You must have a window seat and hold your GPS receiver against the window or it won't work. You should be able to get 4 or 5 sats. Lock on can be difficult compared to when you are in an open space.
Before you enter the terminal building, stand outside and get a lock on all visible sats. This will make it easier to reaquire them when you are on the plane. It is not easy to get a cold first fix from inside a plane.
Most airlines have no official objections to you using GPS during the cruise portion of the flight, but if the crew see you using a GPS then they will sometimes ask you to switch it off. It goes without saying that you must do what they say. I tend to be a little discrete when the crew come past.
A list of Airlines is here: http://gpsinformation.net/airgps/airgps.htm
All airlines ask that you switch off any electronic equipment during takeoff/landing and when the seat belt sign is switched on. This is probably the most interesting part of a flight to track with a GPS. If they see you using it during this time then they will usually just tell you to switch it off.
Good Luck! |

Also keep in mind that most navigation programs think you want to be driving on a street. Mapopolis for example will cap the speed at 158 mph, even if the jet is going 550... _________________ Lutz

I have a little Garmin GPS-V which has a route option for "Off Road" along with Fastest Time and Shortest Distance so no troubles there. I'm not sure if the likes of Tom Tom do this.
It does freak out a bit if you try and do street routing while you are in a plane though. 8O |

Be sure to ask the stewardess for permission. She may not know what GPS is, and may have a hard time understanding that this is just a passive receiver. Especially when the BT light is blinking... _________________ Lutz

I think he is using a CF receiver. I wouldn't recommend using a BT one, radio transmitters are not allowed on commercial flights.
I wouldn't ask permission either, the trolley dolly probably wouldn't have a clue what it is and just tell you not to use it. |
