Hello all, I have been lurking on these forums for a few weeks and after a lot of reading decided to get myself the Ipaq 2210 + TomTom wired gps and TomTom 3, I also have an original IBM 1bg Microdrive + a 256mb PQI CF card + a 256mb SD card (SD card arriving tomorrow, so unsure of brand)

OK, I will unpack the kit tomorrow and have a go at getting everything going, I am a PC reseller/tech so know my way around PC's pretty well but this is my 1st look at a PDA of any description.

I have a card reader/writer in a couple of my PC's and know that if I can do the bulk of any transfers to CF/SD/Microdrive on this it will be a lot faster.

My intended course of action is...

1: Install ActiveSync 2.71
2: Attach and Update Ipaq with latest ROM
3: Format Microdrive (unless I am told here that I would be better with the smaller CF for maps)
4: Install TomTom, this is where some detailed instructions would be apreciated, I understand that the TomTom CD go's on the PC and installs the the 2210 with ActiveSync, but is there an easy way to do say a basic install then to manually add maps + Checkpoint + the postcode software from this site onto the microdrive with my card reader? will tomtom know where everything is?
5: Plug all into my car (either my passat or wifes 406) and drive around all weekend with the kids testing things out

Have I missed anything and are there any common mistakes I should avoid?

Sorry for the long 1st post, if anyone is still awake after that I look forward to and advice given.

Andy

Andy,

Install activesync onto PC before connecting cradle - this is important.
I have just got a new 2210 and it comes with 1.10 loaded, so you probably wont need to upgrade the ROM.
Plug in the cradle, and put the PDA into it, it will sync up with what you ask it to. Make sure you are on line, so that the TT3 disk can register your software, and just input the disk into the CD on your PC. It will load the software onto your PDA, and then ask you to load the maps.

I have loaded mine onto a 256 SD card, works fine. You will need to update to 3.03, this can be found on the TomTom site, and then load CheckPOInt 2.02 which can be found on this site - works very well.

You will need to save the speed cameras also from this site, these will go in the storage card in the "Great_Britain Navigator Map" folder. There are two files, an ov2 and a bmp file.

Configure CheckPOInt to recognise the speed cameras using "Overlay settings..." and off you go.

Enjoy!!
Happy

Sounds a doddle.... but I bet it wont be, thanks for the info, I will follow those instructions and see how I fare.

One other thing, if when I install TT i only choose say 1 small map, can I then manually put the other maps from the cd into the map folder on the microdrive (do I get to choose where maps go when i install?)

Cheers

Hi Andy, Welcome to the world of not getting lost!!.
You have the same setup as myself and i cant stress highly enough the joy you will get from downloading Niels postcode software available through this site. As a computer guy i'm sure you will suss out the installation, some guys have had a few problems, but get it right and this is the best download you will ever get.

Andy,

You can load the maps as you wish, you will only need the GB map, but you will also get MRE, and is of some use. if you travel abroad.I have also loaded some of the european maps, and I must admit I always use active sync and have not had a problem, as there is activations taking place in the background.

I have not had need to load the postcode programme, as TT3 is sufficient for me. Then I am not a long distance lorry driver Laughing

Thanks for all the comments/advice all, ok......

Installed TTN3 no problems at all, checked version and it is 3.01(409), do i need to update this (all seems to work well with one exception which i will get to in a minute), I bought my ipaq on ebay for £150 supposedly new, having checked with HP it seems that it is warranted until January 2005 so must have been used, when I received it all i got was the pda itself, no cradle etc or any discs.
I bought a belkin USB charger/sync cable from staples but find that it is an either/or cable with a button to swap between sync and charge modes, this means that unfortunately i have been unable to update the ipaq rom, I have another (cheaper) cable coming from pdaextras that will do both so that is not a real problem. I will have a look at installing checkpoint and the postcode software at some point... will I lose all that i have installed when i do the rom upgrade?

OK, the only niggle i have had so far with the setup... I took the family out this evening in my wifes peugeot 406, everything worked 100% (I am well impressed by the way, so is the other half which is unusual with any of my "gadget" purchases), when we got home I swapped the kit over into my vw passat, gps seems to be getting signal (shows 7 satellites) but when i put my destination in for tomorrow morning it tells me that the route will be calculated when I have reliable GPS position, didnt do that earlier in the 406 though, any ideas?

I should point out that I live on a road that is on no maps, not even on autoroute 2004 etc and tomtom shows my position as unnamed road.

Cheers

Oz

Only joking - I find the TT3 postcode facility fine for my needs, and others complaining the loudest on this forum about TT3 seem to be lorry drivers. They probably need it more than me.

Andy,

You will need to start travelling before navigator can get a true fix on you - it quite often does say that when you put the destination in before you start moving.

The more you use it the more you will get to know it.

A bit of advice, shut the programme down properly each ime before you switch off the PDA and power down.

Andy,

Just read the rest of your post! There is an upgrade to TT version 3.03 on the tomTom site.

If you upgrade the ROM from 1.0 to 1.1, you will loose everything and start as a fresh PDA. I upgraded my old 3850.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Sorry for the word count Steve Wink

OK, all was going well last night until I installed checkpoint/postcodes and poi-sync, then the fun really started, IPAQ was locking during sync so after a lot of messing around I hard reset it, still problems with sync (Activesync 371 on a server 2003 machine), i uninstalled and reinstalled active sync but it seems that the settings are stored somewhere on the PC, as when i try to setup a connection again the name i choose is already in use (no connections show in activesync), the Ipaq was telling me that I had no network connection setup at one point too.

Back to the drawing board

UPDATE:

When i came back to the ipaq at 7:30 this morning the battery was completely flat and all the installed programs were gone (along with user info etc, basically it had hard reset itself), I am pretty sure I turned it off with the button at the top right, does that turn it off completely?

Firstly, SteveW, no worries no offence taken. Also the postcode look up on TT3 is a big improvement but i still think niels one is the kiddie.
Andy, your battery has to be fully charged otherwise it wont sync and also yes you will lose it all if the battery goes flat, just as mine did as i didn't use it for a week, wont do that again.
I dont know why you got lock up's, just read niels notes on www.digitools.co.uk/ukpostcode.php
Or e-mail him if you have any probs he is pretty good with helping folks.
I have just got TomTom Go, pity it wasn't earlier you could have bought my 2210 tt3 set up with everything setup and working.
Anyway good luck and keep calm as everything does go on your system and works brilliantly so hang in there.

Andy,

If you do a hard reset and reconnect using activesync, without restoring first, it will demand another name - I am on Pocket_PC6 at the moment. You can do a backup using the 2210 software in "Programmes" or as part of Activesync.

To start with, I wouldn't load the Postcode program until you get to know TT3, there is an adequate look up within - if not at good as the add on programme. I have not bothered with POISync either, I just download the speedcamera list, which you need with CheckPOInt. Don't complicate matters to start with, you will have to start afresh if you have done a hard reset - and don't forget to back-up!

I think I have the hang of things now, I think what happened was that I spent several hours with the 2210 on sync mode so it was getting no charge, then just switched it off without stopping any progs, thats what killed the battery, I have everything reinstalled now including postcodes/checkpoint etc and my new cable that will sync/charge simultaneously should be here in the morning.

Cheers for all the help

A couple of comments.

Firstly - I wouldn't put maps on a Microdrive - it's much slower than a flash memory card, and it's likely that route planning performance will be far from brilliant.

So far as deleting old names in ActiveSync goes, you can use the File -> Mobile Device menu option to select a defunct partnership, then File -> Delete Partnership to get rid of it.
