I searched the forum and didn't see this topic address. I want to add serveral groups of Custom POI's. The process is straight forward .. in my case I import them from a text file using the Import utility and they are imported properly. I did this for several groups and all looked well ... each group was listed properly in the main category (CUSTOM) and then their sub-categories ( I had 4 sub categories.) At that time, I exited the CP6 Desktop and put my SD card in the reader and then restarted CP6 and did a download to the SD card including the Custom POI's I had just added. When I went to the PPC and attempted to add a stop by selecting POI's and then the CUSTOM category, there were no sub categories listed.

I thought that was strange ..... I went to a trip in the PPC and then went into the option to set POI notifications .. when I clicked on the plus sign in front of the CUSTOM category, it opened and showed me Custom 1 , Custom 2, etc .... Custom 6. However, I had edited each of those names to match my groups and that's what had been showing in the Manage Custom POI screen.

I restarted the CP6 desktop and went back into the Manage Custom POI screen and all the sub groups were reset back to Custom 1, Custom 2, etc. I tried editing the names again and all showed properly on the screee. I then exited CP6 and restarted again .... all the sub groups were back to Custom 1, Custom 2, etc.

Went to the PPC and did a closer search for a Custom POI as a Stop and found that they all appear to be loaded in the PPC but there are no sub categories to select from ..... I haven't tried turning on POI notification by Custom 1, Custom 2, etc to see if it will notifiy for the proper group (even if the name is wrong). Has anybody else noticed this or found another method to make the sub categories be saved properly and show up on the PPC??

I think that you may be referring above to the "old" Copilot method of creating custom POIs; i.e. from the Data Download Wizard on the Desktop.

CP 6 comes with that old method, but also with another method of creating POIs, using the .OV2 file type, also used by some other navigation packages.

I abandoned POIs in CP 5 and used Pocket Streets in the background because of the length of time the Data Download Wizard took, and other reasons. I have not even attempted to use this old method in CP 6 because of the availability of the new method.

To import .OV2 POIs, copy them, together with their accompanying .BMP files straight into the \Copilot\Save directory (usually on the storage card). As far as I can tell so far, the .OV2 method is working fine. Certainly, none of the problems you have described have shown up.

There is a wealth of .OV2 files available on this website if you search from the home page. The site also offers excellent utilities for converting from Autoroute and, I believe, from text files. Instructions are included on the site too. All of these have been kindly provided by hard working members of the Forum Team and other forum members.

Why go to a new method when I have all the info I need already in files and CP6 is supposed to handle them (even if it is the old way.) Clearly, something isn't working correctly .... I'm still waiting for ALK Tech Support to respond with something. I'll look into the OV2 stuff.

BTW ... I haven't found downloading to the SD card difficult or too time consumming as long as I do it directly to the card and not thru Activesync ... that is painful.

One reason why you might want to consider the OV2 method is the quantity of POI material available in that format in the public domain - at least here in the UK. Also, if the "old" way doesn't work then there's an alternative - a workaround if you want to view it as such.

In the end, of course, what you actually do is your affair.

Sorry .. didn't mean to imply I thought OV2 was a bad idea .... I'm checking into it right now and will give it a try .... just not familiar with it and trying to understand the whole process before I screw the whole thing up. Thanks again for the advice .. still no word back from ALK .... you know I have found their tech support people to be extremely nice on the phone but they sure are hard to get a hold of .... their "24 hour response to email" never happens and when you call, it is usually a very long wait or the answer machine which rarely gets me a return call. ..... what a shame ... they have a potentially fantastic product ........ with a little more communication with their customers and a few fixes they could have the whole market.

What a coincidence .... just heard from ALK ... they acknowlege a problem with the POI Import and Management functions in CP6 and are working on a release. I was told that they anticipate making the release of the patch by about mid next week (~Dec 15th). They also confirmed that that OV2 file process seems to be working ok ... so Ponderous that might just be the trick for now if I can just figure out exactly how to do it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

On the one occasion I rang ALK support in the UK since receiving CP 6, they answered the 'phone immediately. In view of my pre-CP 6 experience, I emailed them to say how pleasing it was. Unfortunately, you and others posting on these forums, as well as (admittedly few) users, with whom I have had contact, suggest that I was just lucky that time.

I agree that this is a shame, not least because, like you,

That is a step forward, and I think that users can bear with a company that does acknowledge a situation and does gives projected dates ... assuming, of course, that, more or less, it will meet them.

I tried buying an upgrade to the full European maps a couple of days ago. Given that all I need is to give them my credit card details and get them to generate a 25 character license key, I expected to get it pretty quickly. Instead I got an email saying that they would get in touch.

They haven't yet. However, I sent an email to Alain Kornhauser
who is the Founder & Board Chairman, ALK Technologies, Inc.
at alaink@alk.com as well as ukcustservice@alk.eu.com and eusales@alk.eu.com

He replied within a few hours saying that he would look into it.

I wouldn't have hassled him for a bug, but I tried contacting them by phone without success. He needs to get their sales administration sorted as it seems to be in a mess.

Andrew

In USA I was told by ALK sales on 15 Nov that the EU upgrade for V6 would be available in "about 4 to 6 weeks".

I will be getting it in a while but I am not in a hurry at the moment.

On my last two trips to Europe, the day of departure was consumed with getting the EU maps installed and activated. Both times I was about to give up but with luck or ALK tech support I got them working with just enough time left to catch the plane. In fact I technically missed a flight but a sympathetic ticket agent pushed me to the head of the long security line.

I'm in the UK. I already have the disks for CP6. I'm just trying to buy a license code that unlocks all the European maps. Normally you only get access to the maps for one region.
