The Navman serial driver just maps the sleeve onto a virtual COM port - seeing that TT5 can communicate with the Navman sleeve, I'm drawn to the conclusion that it's TT5 interpretation of the Navman data that's the problem...[/quote]

I think you're barking up the wrong tree here...

I am using a TomTom wired GPS unit, the diamond shaped silver one, on a Dell Axin x50v.
It works perfectly with TT3, solid lock within 15s from warm and within a few minutes from cold, lots of sats which stay locked. With TT5.1 it takes about 50minutes from cold and about 2 minutes from warm stationary, longer if moving. However, TT5.1 ALWAYS forces a cold start if the GPS mouse has been turned off for a few minutes. So the first 50mins of any journey is done without directions.
It's beyond me how the guys at TT could break an excellent piece of software (TT3) and produce such a large pile of useless crap that TT5 is in one single upgrade (downgrade more like). Then they rub salt into the wounds by disabling my TT3 activation code so I can't go back to a working version !!
You've probably guessed I'm not a happy bunny. If only I could navigate to the TT HQ I would give them a piece of my mind Wink

No arguments there...

I couldnt agree more. It would seem that TT5 is geared more towards the TTGo product, and the PDA development is a by-product.

As you have said, its ashame that TT5 seems to have taken a step backwards after what was delivered with TT3.
