My brother, who lives in Barcelona, saw my iPaq/TomTom system at the weekend and is now seriously interested in getting his own. He'd like it to be based around a PDA, but we're open to suggestions on the software both for road navigation and hiking.

He drives all over Spain and the Balearics, using the most obscure dust tracks through the mountains when possible, so quality of map coverage in this area is the key concern. He also hikes a fair bit, mostly in the Pyrenees.

He also drives on business a fair bit through France and the UK, and occasionally further afield in Europe.

And finally, for years we've been talking about taking his Discovery into Northern Africa, probably Morocco. What options, if any, are there for there?

Barry

The best choice for raods would be TomTom, NavMan, Destinator, or Co-Pilot. The mapping for Spain is quite good in the areas that I have visited (mainly in the cities around Barcelona) I ma not sure what the mountain dirt road coverage is going to be like.

For offroad hiking, biking etc you need to look at an application like MemoryMap, OziExplorer, or Fugawi. I dont know if digital maps are available of the areas, but there certainly should be some paper ones which can be scanned in and calibrated with greater or lesser effect.
