If I click on the RSS feed link in my IE7 browser, I get a broken page. Is the feed working or supported? This has been broken for a while.
Thanks! |

Hmm, that's annoying. I just get jump to "http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/backend.php" that Aaaahhh...
The title of the page says "Feeds with DTDs are not supported". I'd not noticed the difference between that and the normal page not found error.
More details says "This feed contains a DTD (Document Type Definition). DTDs are used to define a structure of a webpage. Internet Explorer does not support DTDs in feeds."
Hmm. Do you need the DTD reference? If IE7 can't read your feed, then you are getting less and less people able to read it. |

Yet another case of Microsoft ignoring defined standards and making their own rules up.
Whilst I could suggest you use a decent Newsreader (and browser!) I'll see if we can modify our .xml to accommodate Microsoft and resolve the error _________________ Darren Griffin |

Matthew, give it a whirl now. MikeB our resident guru on all things web has tweaked it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I still get the error at the moment, and that's after clearing the cache. Viewing the page source shows I have " rss PUBLIC "-//Netscape Communications//DTD RSS 0.91//EN"
"http://my.netscape.com/publish/formats/rss-0.91.dtd"" at the top. |

In other words they are a security risk for their exploit infested browsers! And so rather than fix the browser they re-write an internet wide standard reference! _________________ Darren Griffin |

I don't know the answer to that, as I can't get it to work! You have more than one feed? I just click the RSS button on the IE7 toolbar that appears when I am at the home page, or reading this page. They take me to http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/backend.php which then gives me the error message. Viewing the source of that page shows it has a DTD specified.
Microsoft's pitch seems to be that you shouldn't have a DTD because the format is known, and the DTD comes from outside your site so it could be corrupted and cause every reader to fail if badly formed. Why they don't just ignore it I don't know, but since I doubt any other reader requires the DTD reference, I should think it could go easily.
Given I'm the only one mentioning it, maybe it doesn't matter, or maybe I'm the only one stubborn enough to persist and bring it up.

I get the same issue with Vista (IE7) - to be honest I only use RSS on the PDA style phone so its not an issue for me, I tried it a while back on the PC out of interest and got exactly the same as you do - Mike |

OK, having just spent an hour looking at .RSS schemas, Doctypes and a whole other bunch of stuff I really didn't fancy learning about I've made a tweak.
I've also dusted off Vista (another thing I dislike!) and tested and it appears to be working. Can you re-test so that i can then dump all this new found knowledge to the trash?
FWIW it worked fine before on Opera, Firefox, Safari and three different standalone RSS readers. Yet another reason why I have developed a dislike for MS! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Working fine for me now - many thanks. (Under XP - it is a sort of automatic upgrade to IE7 nowadays). |

Thanks Matthew, good to know. And apologies for the anti-MS speech, I spent many years as a Microsoft Systems Engineer so its not all just for the sake of it but I have now seen the light _________________ Darren Griffin |
